Leaf Day: A Great Republic Holiday

Posted by Sarah M. on 16th Oct 2019

If you ask most Cherry Republic employees what their favorite season is, they’ll more than likely tell you that it's fall. In Northern Michigan, the weather during this time of year is still beautiful, and there’s a nice lull between the crazy days of summer and the jolly-yet-hectic weeks leading up to Christmas. The only problem is, there isn’t an official holiday throughout the fall season. So with a nod toward our whimsical company value of ‘Beaches’ (as in “Life, Liberty, Beaches & Pie"), ...

Celebrating Leaf Day - The Republic's Holiday

Ask most CR employees, and they’ll most likely tell you their favorite season is fall. Northern Michigan weather is still beautiful, and there’s a nice lull between the crazy days of summer and the jolly-yet-hectic weeks leading up to Christmas. What is Leaf Day? The only problem is, there isn’t an official holiday that time of year. So with a nod toward our whimsical company value of ‘Beaches’ (as in “Life, Liberty, Beaches & Pie ...

An Evening Supporting MLCV With Bob + Steph

Posted by andrewm on 31st Jul 2018

Cherry Republic President Bob Sutherland and his wife, Stephanie, are hosting a party at the new Cherry Public House in Glen Arbor to support Michigan League of Conservation Voters (MLCV). We will discuss the current state of Michigan’s waterways and our vision for a powerful conservation voters movement in 2018 and beyond. Please come join Bob and Steph and many other like-minded lovers of Michigan's woods and waters to see what actions we can take to protect them for generations to come. P ...

Tickling Our Funny Bone

Posted by andrewm on 11th Jul 2018

We had a sneaking suspicion that our Citizens are among the most clever folks around, and you proved us right! Last month we put the word out that we were looking for new quips for our legendary in-store signs, and we received ideas from more than 100 people! Our first winner was Sandra Byrnes, who submitted this little gem: “CAUTION! Free range children.”   Next up was John Love, who gave us this profound thought to ponder: "If George Washington had chopped down an apple tree, no one ...

Sneak Peek: The Cherry Public House!

Posted by andrewm on 11th May 2018

Our new Cherry Public House is one week away from opening.  It is looking fantastic and we are so excited.   Here is a little sneak peak as we finish up the zillion final details. Here is a view from the front of the newly renovated building.  You see new windows and doors, a new patio, and a new paint color with a first coat that's looking a little bit too orange.  This renovation into a brewery and full service restaurant serving dinners, dinners, and more dinners was a big job. We ripped ...

Some Snowy Springtime Fun

Posted by andrewm on 14th Apr 2018

It snowed eight inches again last night. Here we are, halfway through April and Northern Michigan is back to winter wonderland for the second time in 10 days. We’ve had these little windows of spring that allowed us a hike on the beach last weekend. It was a mix of beautiful sandy beach to stretch out on (in our coats) and yet, just 100 yards down the beach four foot ice mounds to climb on. Here are some photos of the family and I enjoying a beach of perfect balance between winter and spring. ...

The Joy of Giving

Posted by andrewm on 17th Nov 2017

The holiday season is here, and at Cherry Republic we’ve had “joy” on our minds. The joy of living in Northern Michigan … the joy of two terrific cherry crops in a row … the joy of a successful summer and fall season (thanks to all of you). But perhaps most importantly, we are focused on the joy of giving. After all, nothing feels better than brightening someone’s world with a heartfelt gift of ruby red morsels of joy from the happy lands of Northern Michigan.   And so, with joy in our hearts ...

A Wonderful Leaf Day 2017

Posted by andrewm on 19th Oct 2017

First Stop: Grass Lake Nature Preserve I took my family to the other side of Grand Traverse Bay — to Torch Lake, Bellaire and the farms, trails, woods and wetlands of Antrim County. It took some time to persuade the boys that this switch in Leaf Day activities would be worth it. “Usually, we go exploring nature in Sleeping Bear Dunes Park for the whole day,” reasoned Colebrook. “There’s no time wasted sitting in a car.”  “It is a change,” I agreed. “You don’t have to go — you can stay in sc ...

Leaf Day Around the Republic

Posted by andrewm on 19th Oct 2017

Cherry Ambassadors around the Republic took full advantage of Leaf Day 2017. From baking with family and friends, to fishing in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, to driving a semi to Kansas City for our first holiday gift show of 2017. Here are some of our favorite stories... Fishing the Pere Marquette River JP, our I.T. hero, spent his Leaf Day on a day-long guided fishing float trip down the Pere Marquette River with Steve Galbraith and world renowned fishing guide Steve Cornetet.  It was a beauti ...

Leaf Day - A Letter from Our President

Posted by andrewm on 15th Oct 2017

Dear Customers, I am happy to announce Leaf Day, our very own Cherry Republic National Holiday. We will be closed today Monday, October 16, to honor the autumn season and all the good in our lives. I feel like I should apologize to all of you for being closed, but truly, more than anything, I feel compelled to express my gratitude to the hundreds of thousands of people who have supported us so loyally. It is your support that has compelled us to work tirelessly this summer and fall to ke ...

Summer Into Fall

Posted by andrewm on 28th Sep 2017

This September has truly become an extension of summer.  I am thankful that the boys haven’t had any homework, so the moment they are out of school we’ve been able to do all the million things a person can do under the sun in Northern Michigan.  Colebrook and Hawthorn caught the biggest fish they’ve ever had on a line.  They built beach structures and slept on the beach under the stars.  They’ve snorkeled and tubed and learn to water ski.  But again, these photos can express the fun far better t ...

Two Boys and Their Lines

Posted by andrewm on 22nd Sep 2017

The Coho came into the Crystal River recently.  Colebrook and Hawthorn have been driving by the fishermen on their way to school each day, which really put them in a fishing frenzy this past weekend.  On Friday night, we shopped in TC for spawn bags, hooks, and heavy duty line, and when the boys woke up Saturday morning they had one goal-- catch a big Coho, King or Chinook Salmon.   [gallery columns="2" size="medium" ids="5874,5875"] As you can see from the photo’s, both boys had success. ...

Glen Arbor Campus Expansion

Posted by andrewm on 23rd Aug 2017

At Cherry Republic, we have what you would call a good problem. We’ve been so blessed with visitors flocking to our Glen Arbor campus that we are, quite literally, bursting at the seams. We simply cannot squeeze any more customers into our store, winery, and cafe. And like many of our fellow Glen Arbor retailers and restaurateurs, we are fortunate to have the Sleeping Bear Sand Dunes National Lakeshore bringing so many new people to our little lakeside town.   We also realize that with all of ...

The Balaton Cherry - From France And Hungary, With Love

Posted by andrewm on 18th Aug 2017

You may be a self-professed tart cherry aficionado, but do you know how Traverse City and the surrounding area came to be known as the Cherry Capital of the World? And here’s a bonus question worthy of Trivia Night: Can you name the differences between a Montmorency and a Balaton cherry? Cherry Capital of the World Let’s start with the illustrious Cherry Capital title. In the mid-19th century, a Presbyterian missionary named Peter Dougherty was in search of a crop that would flourish in the sa ...

Summer Photo Challenge Round One

Posted by bob on 17th Jul 2014

Each day, we strive to live and work by our motto Life, Liberty, Beaches and Pie. It means something special to each and every person so we set out to capture its essence in a Summer Photo Challenge. Does your definition include crystal blue water and an endless sand beach? Maybe it's a golden sunset. Maybe it's sharing a moment with family and friends on a dock. Or maybe it's watching a Bald Eagle soar over the hills and valleys of northern Michigan. No matter what it is, all that matters is ...
