Northern Michigan really tells its’ own tale to each person uniquely. The Holidays in the Republic

Posted by bob on 17th Dec 2014

Ahhh, the Great Hall is so peaceful this Wednesday morning while all that Christmas rush is happening in other parts of Cherry Republic. A brief thaw over the last week had us wondering if we'd miss out on a white Christmas this year. The snow melted, and even the ice on Little Glen – which had been thick enough to skate on – began to break up. But last night the weather turned again, delivering strong winds, stormy skies, and a couple of inches of fluffy white snow on the ground. So it t ...

Just one of many amazing Sleeping Bear Dune National Lakeshore views that we will enjoy during the hike. A new hiking trail is coming to the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. It's called the Bay to Bay Trail, and it will run the length of the park, from Platte Bay at the south end to Good Harbor Bay at the north end. While the project is not fully funded yet, we're hoping that the park will start building the trail a year from now and complete it by the summer of 2016. Naturally, ...

Riding the Sleeping Bear Heritage Trail

The Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore has long been renowned for its beauty. Spectacular views of the dunes, rolling hills, inland lakes, and of course Lake Michigan are everywhere. Until recently, soaking in this gorgeous landscape was most easily accomplished by car. A short drive to one of the scenic overlooks or along Pierce Stocking Scenic Drive would have you face to face with the majesty of northern Michigan. Sure, you could bike or hike along the roads, but few people with young ...

Surfing in Northern Michigan

Surfers heading to the beach at Sleeping Bear Point. Photo: Beth Price. It may be about a thousand miles to the nearest ocean, but you can surf in northern Michigan. While the waves are usually small, the right conditions can produce surprisingly large and high-quality surf. Sadly, those conditions aren't that common until the fall. But after mid-October, the winds whipping off Lake Michigan really start to pick up. For the adventurous few who surf the Great Lakes, these gales create a uniqu ...
