2016 Glen Arbor Area Winter

Posted by bob on 28th Jan 2016

Above is a favorite angle of the Crystal River at the Dunns Farm Rd culvert. Here is a second view of the Dunns Farm culvert looking straight up the Crystal River.  If you have never paddled the Crystal in the winter, this mild winter would be a great year to do it. Can you see the duck in flight at the far side of the Crystal.  If the river freezes over, the ducks all head to Lake Michigan. The plows were out in mass.  We had a two hour school delay, which is almost as ...

The Re-Arbor Glen Arbor Fundraising Campaign has raised $45,000.  Thank you to all who have contributed to this important effort.  From the moment the storm cleared, we’ve been hard at work clearing, rebuilding and fundraising.  What have we accomplished in the three months since the storm?  Here is a short photo blog update: We have to begin with the Glen Lake Community Reform Church’s Neighbors Helping Neighbors volunteer effort.  They have cleaned up 27 yards and put in 500 volunteer ...

Cherry Republic's Leaf Day

Posted by bob on 7th Oct 2015

What should citizens do on Leaf Day? Dress up? Give gifts? Hide Baskets? Make a big dinner? Those are all too much work. How about do nothing. How about a purposeless day? A day to just reflect on the beauty of nature? Leaf Day was created by Cherry Republic to celebrate the amazing colors of fall, and to take a day to reflect or enjoy the outdoors in the last of our good weather.  We are all so busy all summer and into fall that we don’t often find time to just enjoy the outdoors.  Leaf Day w ...

Posted by bob on 25th Sep 2014

Just one of many amazing Sleeping Bear Dune National Lakeshore views that we will enjoy during the hike. A new hiking trail is coming to the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. It's called the Bay to Bay Trail, and it will run the length of the park, from Platte Bay at the south end to Good Harbor Bay at the north end. While the project is not fully funded yet, we're hoping that the park will start building the trail a year from now and complete it by the summer of 2016. Naturally, ...

Posted by bob on 2nd Jul 2014

Local Fourth of July fireworks display over Glen Lake, 2013. The Fourth of July weekend is one of the busiest weekends all summer in northern Michigan. Visitors from around the country flood the soft beaches, crystal blue waters, and energized towns to enjoy true American freedom. All those people can be a great amount of fun -- what's a parade without a big happy crowd. Sometimes though, we need a little peace and quiet. If you are looking to escape the crowds this Fourth of July week ...

Pierce Stocking Scenic Drive

Just one of the many breathtaking vistas to be found on Pierce Stocking Scenic Drive No list of northern Michigan scenery is complete without a mention of Pierce Stocking Scenic Drive. Situated between Glen Arbor and Empire it offers spectacular views, firstly through forest and across Glen Lake, and then over the dunes and out across Lake Michigan. A little over seven miles long, Pierce Stocking Scenic Drive snakes its way through the steeply rolling hills of the Lake Michigan shoreline. ...
